Akshay Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is a highly auspicious and sacred day for the Hindus and Jain communities. According to Vedic literature, this day must be utilized for cultivating spiritual strengths. This is done through reading scriptures, special poojas, the family deity worship, noble cause, offering homage to one's ancestors, associated with devotees, taking care of brahmins, planting and watering trees, feeding the poor, sponsoring education, etc. When the activities like these are performed on this day, one acquires spiritual strengths to complete their prescribed karmas. As a result, one gradually attains both spiritual wealth and material luxury.


As per the Hindu calendar, Akshaya Tritiya falls on the third day of the lunar cycle of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakh. Vaishakh in Sanskrit means churning stick. It is a month of churn out the essence, the substance, the most promising or the purest. The Sanskrit word "Akshaya" comprises "A" (not) and "Kshaya" (erode). It implies that which does not decay, diminish or deteriorate. "Akshaya" also signifies inexhaustible and undecaying, while 'Tritiya' is the 3rd phase of the waning Moon. The 3rd phase of the waxing Moon in the Vedic month of Vaishakh (May - June) is celebrated as Akshaya Tritiya. On this day, the Sun and the Moon are in exaltation; they are simultaneously at their pinnacle of splendor, which happens only once every year. The result of activity on this day does not diminish; instead, they multiply. Therefore the benefits of performing Meditation, Yoga, offering homage to one's ancestors, charities (Dan-Punya), etc., on this day are perpetual because they fulfill one's, inner soul.

As Akshaya Tritiya is one of the most auspicious festivals, it is the day of manifold blessings. It marks the setting of Treta Yuga among the three Yugas (Satya, Dwapar and Kali). Any good work performed on this day will indeed invoke manifold Divine results. Buying gold on Akshaya Tritiya is believed to invite endless fortune into one's life, which means the auspicious presence of Lakshmi. If there is a day that deserves to be praised as the Festival of Gold, it is the Akshaya Tritiya. It is believed that on this day, Kubera achieved the post of treasurer; therefore, buying and worshipping gold pleases him.

In India, the Jain community commemorates Lord Rishabha's ending his one-year fast by drinking sugarcane juice in his cupped hands on Akshaya Tritiya. Lord Rishabha was the first Tirthankara (one who takes others to Tirtha or a holy place across the river of birth and death).


Even the scriptures refer to this day with great reverence. The Mahabharata epic narrates that the Pandavas received the Akshaya Patram, the bowl that grants undiminishing food on this day. Annapurna, the Goddess of food, was born on this day, and later, Lord Shiva came down as a beggar and took alms from Annapurna on this day. This is the day Lord Krishna bestowed unimaginable wealth on his poor friend Sudama who had come to see him with a handful of rice flakes. Kubera, the Banker in heaven, also got his coveted position on Akshaya Tritiya due to his past giving habits on this day.
